About

Have you ever wondered how fast a toboggan on concrete skis can go? Or how to make a canoe out of pure concrete? These are just a few of the design challenges the University of Waterloo’s Concrete Team aims to solve every year!

By combining the knowledge and experience from engineering undergraduates of all disciplines, the team is able to compete annually at two highly renowned national engineering design competitions: the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race and the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition.

Each year we strive to be better, create more innovative designs, and above all learn from and connect with fellow engineering undergraduates across the country. As the oldest student design team at the University of Waterloo, we aim to set an example for design innovation and competitive spirit.

Competitions

GNCTR 2020

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the largest student run engineering competition in Canada. Dating back to 1975, GNCTR now brings over 450 engineering students from over 15 universities and technical institution to race concrete toboggans and carry on the competition traditions of teamwork, sportsmanship, school spirit and innovation. The GNCTR competitors must design and build a toboggan that can safely carry five passengers. The toboggans must have a running surface made entirely out of concrete, a structural frame, and braking system and a functional steering system, weighing less than 300lbs. The teams are judge on their design on the toboggan, a technical report, the race day speed and school spirit.

GNCTR 2020 will be hosted by University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario from January 29th - February 2nd , 2020!

CNCCC 2019

The Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition (CNCCC) is a design competition for universities building concrete canoes, that must hold four people and float when completely filled with water. The teams are judge on their canoe design, and race day performance.

CNCCC 2019 was hosted by École Polytechnique de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec from May 15th - 18th, 2019.
